News from Native California

Welcome to
News from Native California

Welcome to News from Native California, a quarterly magazine devoted to California's indigenous people. Regular features, such as our Calendar, announce and report on Native events. Feature articles range from ceremonial regalia and traditional use of tobacco to environmental issues and California archaeology, all emphasizing Native Californian points of view, historic and contemporary. We also regularly feature poetry, short stories, plays, and literary non-fiction by California Indian writers. Regular columns address California Indian languages, the arts, books, skills & technology, law, and more.

We hope that you will enjoy News from Native California and that you will let us know what features you like and what you would like to see in the future.

We hope that you will enjoy the resources offered here!

Friends of News from Native California

While News from Native California has in fact thrived over the years, it is also a project housed within the larger non-profit organization known as Heyday Institute. It is no secret that over the years, News from Native California has been nourished by contributions from over 300 individuals and institutions who have donated gifts for operating expenses or specific projects.

Last year, both News from Native California and Heyday Books were merged entirely with our nonprofit Heyday Institute, and subsequently, we have launched a new Friends organization known as Friends of Heyday. To avoid the sheer confusion and heartache of keeping the two Friends organizations separate, we have decided to merge Friends of News into Friends of Heyday, and ask that with your renewal, that you check the box marked “This donation is specifically for the California Indian Publishing Program and News from Native California magazine”. That way, we can continue to honor your support for News and to acknowledge your generosity in the magazine and related reports, on our website, in our catalogs, and books.

If you would like to support the News from Native California and other California Indian Publishing programs, join Friends of Heyday here. Thanks!
