Birds of Berkeley Festival: Winged Wonderment

Join Heyday Authors John Muir Laws, Alex Harris and Oliver James at the Berkeley Bird Festival’s Winged Wonderment event.

This five-hour live celebration of our winged friends will feature bird poetry, bird stories, bird art, bird sounds, and bird conservation lectures from local writers, artists, naturalists, and bird enthusiasts.

Join in person or online! Drop in for 15 minutes or stay for the whole afternoon! There will be 40 socially distanced seats available in the second-floor Tamalpais Room. Seats will likely open up soon if the event is full when you arrive. Please sign the waiting list at the festival information table in the lobby.

About the Speakers

John Muir Laws

John Muir Laws

John Muir Laws is an award-winning naturalist, educator, and artist with degrees in conservation and resource studies, wildlife biology, and scientific illustration. His books include The Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada, The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds, The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling, and (with Emilie Lygren) How to Teach Nature Journaling, all published by Heyday. A principal innovator in the global nature journaling movement, he is cofounder of the Wild Wonder Foundation (wildwonder.org), a nonprofit encouraging nature connection through art and science. Oliver James

Oliver James

Oliver James was born in Berkeley in 1991. He started watching birds in his backyard on Colusa Avenue at age five and never turned back. Since then, he has competed in national birding tournaments, worked as a birding tour guide, and joined ornithological research teams from Peru to Alaska. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 2009 and Wesleyan University in 2014, and in 2021 he received master’s degrees from the Energy and Resources Group and the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley. James is also the author of A Field Guide to the Birds of Wesleyan (Wesleyan University Press, 2014).

Alex Harris

Alex Harris

Alex Harris, born and raised in Berkeley, California, is an artist interested in using art and technology to look at how humans interface with the natural world. He has a BA in environmental studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and previously worked as the web editor and electronic communications manager at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. He lives and works in Oakland, California.
