Dorothy Lazard at Books Inc. Alameda

Dorothy Lazard presents her memoir published by Heyday, What You Don’t Know Will Make a Whole New World, in conversation with Jenee Darden at Books Inc. Alameda. This event will be recorded live and aired on KALW’s Sights and Sounds broadcast.

Dorothy Lazard was born in St. Louis and grew up in San Francisco and Oakland. A librarian for nearly forty years, she joined the staff of the Oakland Public Library in 2000. From 2009 until her retirement in 2021, she was the head librarian of OPL’s Oakland History Center, where she encouraged people of all ages and backgrounds to explore local history. Lazard is the 2023 recipient of the Oscar Lewis Award in Western History from the Book Club of California. She lives in Oakland.

Jeneé Darden is an award-winning journalist, author, public speaker and proud Oakland native. She is the executive producer and host of the weekly arts segment Sights & Sounds as well as the series Sights + Sounds Magazine. Jeneé also covers East Oakland for KALW. Jeneé has reported for NPR, Marketplace, KQED, KPCC, The Los Angeles Times, Ebony magazine, Refinery29 and other outlets. Her first book, When a Purple Rose Blooms (Nomadic Press), is a collection of essays and poetry about her personal journey through Black womanhood. Her work is also published in the books Previously on X-Men: The Making of an American Series and We’ve Been Too Patient: Voices from Radical Mental Health.
