Big Alma Book Launch

In conjunction with Veterans’ Day, and the republication of Big Alma by Bernice Scharlach, this lecture describes the story behind the founding of San Francisco’s Legion of Honor by Alma and Adolph Spreckels. Martin Chapman, curator in charge of European decorative arts and sculpture, presents a special lecture, “Alma Spreckles and the Founding of the Legion of Honor”, followed by a book launch celebration.

Bernice Scharlach (1919–2004), a journalist-historian, wrote for many Bay Area publications. She wrote two other books: House of Harmony, a history of the Concordia-Argonaut Club, and Dealing from the Heart, a biography of San Francisco philanthropist Benjamin Swig.
