EMPIRE MOON with Mariah Young and Susan Straight

PEN Center USA will present EMPIRE MOON, a reading and networking event for the local literary arts community featuring a hosted reading, live DJ, and cash bar. EMPIRE MOON will also include a table alley where local literary nonprofits, writing collectives, and journals can distribute contact materials. In the interest of showcasing the area’s writing-program talent, the reading lineup for EMPIRE MOON features Tod Goldberg and Maggie Downs from University of California, Riverside (Palm Desert); Greg Bills and Rachel Reynolds from the University of Redlands; Chad Sweeney and André V. Katkov from Cal State University, San Bernardino; and Mariah K. Young (Masha’allah and Other Stories) and Susan Straight from University of California, Riverside.

Mariah K. YoungMariah K. Young was born in Alameda, California, and spent her childhood living in the Bay Area and in Lahaina, Hawai‘i. She graduated with an English degree from California State University, East Bay—she still calls it Cal State Hayward, even though no one’s counting anymore—where she won the first annual RV Williams prize for fiction. In 2008, she earned her MFA in creative writing from UC Riverside, andthat same year, she attended the Squaw Valley Writers’ workshop on fellowship. She currently teaches writing in downtown Los Angeles, and lives in Hollywood, where she is hard at work on a novel (when she’s not grading essays).
