Julia Parker is a master basket weaver of the Coast Miwok and Kashaya Pomo tribes and student of the great basket weavers of the twentieth century Lucy Telles, Carrie Bethel, Mabel McKay, and Elsie Allen. Over the last fifty years, Parker has emerged as one of the preeminent Native American basket makers of California. Distinguished elder of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria and long time resident of Yosemite Valley, Parker is a prolific artist, teacher, and storyteller. Parker was worked as a cultural specialist at the Yosemite Museum since 1960, and as an artist and elder, she is respected as a carrier of indigenous thinking and making. Julia and her daughter Lucy host a three-day workshop in which 20 participants will weave a basket. All materials are provided.

In October, Heyday will release Scrape the Willow until It Sings, a book by Deborah Valoma about Julia Parker. The Workshop Residence will host the launch party, so stay tuned for details.
