SUMMARY:Greg Sarris at Book Passage
DESCRIPTION:Join Book Passage (Corte Madera) in welcoming Greg Sarris\, acclaimed storyteller and author of The Last Human Bear. \n\n\n\nSet against the backdrop of 20th-century California Indian country\, Sarris’ novel transports readers to migrant field worker camps\, Depression-era rancherias\, and cinematic Sonoma landscapes to follow the life journey of Mary Hatcher\, a Native Pomo woman of unbow-able spirit. Forged in tragedy and endowed with peculiar secrets from her Coast Miwok stepmother\, Mary comes of age an outcast among her own people\, rumored to be a tolik—a poisoner\, a shapeshifter\, and the last of her kind.  \n\n\n\nA mystery even to herself\, Mary passes between Native and white societies\, carving a path against the twin headwinds of prejudice and poverty toward hard-fought independence. A life of defiant trysts and turns\, two loves\, and one curse culminate in a haunting final act for which Mary must unburden herself in order to die: “That’s why I’m talking. I can’t go on until I pass on this business.” \n\n\n\nWith The Last Human Bear Sarris delivers an unforgettable protagonist surrounded by a lucidly realized cast of characters. Offering an engrossing rejoinder to the paucity of fiction centering California’s first peoples\, Mary’s story—textured with code-switching\, old world lore\, and a quiet enchantment with the more-than-human world—illuminates her times and introduces a voice to American fiction that has been conspicuously absent.  \n\n\n\nRendered with a “touch that is both delicate and vivid\,” says Copperfield’s book buyer Sheryl Cotleur\, “this novel is so much more rich and complicated than a few words can express\, and it is so very worth it to discover that in the reading.”  \n\n\n\nGreg Sarris is an accomplished author\, university professor\, and tribal leader currently serving his seventeenth term as Chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. His publications include Keeping Slug Woman Alive\, Grand Avenue\, Watermelon Nights\, How a Mountain Was Made\, Becoming Story\, and The Forgetters. In June 2026 his new novel\, The Last Human Bear\, will debut. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Sundance Institute\, former board chair of the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian\, and a member of the Board of Regents for the University of California. Greg lives and works in Sonoma County\, California. Visit his website at greg-sarris.com. Photograph by Beowulf Sheehan. \n\n\n\n Register Here

SUMMARY:Dillon Osleger at Bart's Books
DESCRIPTION:Join Dillon Osleger and Rick Ridgeway for a conversation about Dillon’s book Trail Work at Bart’s Books in Ojai\, CA. \n\n\n\nIn Trail Work\, Dillon Osleger excavates the forgotten trails of the Western United States. He shows how one of the greatest infrastructure investments in the nation’s history—paths through our public lands—has been rubbed away by time and deliberate neglect. \n\n\n\nOsleger unearths the wagon roads\, water sources\, trap lines\, and Indigenous trading trails that once knitted the West together. He reveals centuries of path building\, more than two-thirds of a nationwide network of trails and campgrounds\, now erased from the map. Dwindling federal investment and privatized timber forests\, ranches\, and oil fields have blocked access to public lands\, prompting to Osleger to ask: How can we better care for the places that are claimed for the American public\, but are too often abandoned or sold? \n\n\n\nOsleger has trail eyes like no other from his years as a trail builder\, geologist\, professional mountain biker\, and public lands advocate. Here he offers a land ethic born of joy in stewardship\, attention to history and community\, and living and cycling lightly. From the Central California Coast to the Sierra Nevada\, out to Colorado and up to Washington\, Osleger embarks on a wayfinder’s journey\, revealing an atlas of lost trails for everyone who loves the outdoors. \n\n\n\nDillon Osleger is a scientist\, writer\, and environmental advocate whose work is anchored in society’s relationship with wild and rapidly changing environments. With an academic background in geology\, ecology\, and climate science\, he has spent over a decade working on trail restoration\, land management\, and public lands policy across the American West. His writing has appeared in Outside\, the Los Angeles Times\, Patagonia’s The Cleanest Line\, and Earth and Planetary Science Letters\, focusing on the confluence of land use\, climate\, environmental justice\, and historical memory. Whether in Washington\, D.C.\, or the backcountry of the Sierra\, Osleger brings a grounded perspective to how people move through and care for place. Trail Work is his first book and he lives in Truckee\, Lake Tahoe. \n\n\n\nRick Ridgeway is an outdoor adventurer\, writer and advocate for sustainability and conservation initiatives. For 15 years\, Rick was the VP of Environmental Affairs and then VP of Public Engagement at Patagonia\, Inc. During his tenure he has worked with teams to develop and launch environmental and sustainability initiatives including Freedom to Roam\, the Footprint Chronicles\, the Responsible Economy Campaign and Worn Wear. He is co-founder of Cascale (formerly the Sustainable Apparel Coalition)\, today the largest apparel\, footwear and home textile trade organization in the world that is also developer of the Higg Index suite of tools for sustainability measurement and management. In addition\, Rick is recognized as one of the world’s foremost mountaineers. With three companions\, he was the first American to summit K2\, and he has done other significant climbs and explorations on all continents. He has written seven books\, many magazine stories and produced and directed dozens of television shows. Rick lives in Ojai\, California\, and has three children and four grandchildren. \n\n\n\n Register Here

SUMMARY:Greg Sarris at the Center for Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Join Heyday author Greg Sarris at the Center for Fiction\, taking part in the panel “Indigenous Narratives of the Past\, Present\, and Future.” This event is ticketed. \n\n\n\nLong before the first Europeans set foot on Turtle Island\, Indigenous people shared and recorded their stories and histories. In a conversation moderated by scholar Joseph M. Pierce (Cherokee)\, novelists Eliana Ramage (Cherokee) and Greg Sarris (Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria)\, along with historian Linford D. Fisher\, will consider Native literature from cultural\, anthropological\, and fictional perspectives. As many commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, the authors will offer a clear-eyed examination of America’s past while celebrating Indigenous presents and futures. \n\n\n\nThis panel will bring together Fisher’s rich account of the long history of Indigenous enslavement and land dispossession; Ramage’s and Sarris’s fictional depictions of a Depression-era shape-shifter and a modern-day aspiring Cherokee astronaut\, respectively; and Pierce’s theorization of future worlds and imaginaries that illuminate Indigenous thought and practice. A book signing will follow the event. \n\n\n\nGreg Sarris is an accomplished author\, university professor\, and tribal leader currently serving his seventeenth term as Chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. His publications include Keeping Slug Woman Alive\, Grand Avenue\, Watermelon Nights\, How a Mountain Was Made\, Becoming Story\, and The Forgetters.
