It’s a Small, Small World

Did I mention how small it is?

So this little story is not really related to literature, publishing, or even books at all, but I thought it would be fun to share with this circle of Heyday friends a fun coincidence I experienced recently.

As I’m sure we all know, people involved with Heyday get up to all sorts of interesting things in their lives, and their pasts are no exception. I’ve been working on a small personal project for Heyday board member Mike McCone, who was a Peace Corps director in the 1960s. He and his family spent several years living in Sierra Leone, Malawi, and Sarawak (Borneo).

Just the other day, my husband’s aunt and uncle came over for a short visit, and somehow in the course of the conversation the Peace Corps came up, and I mentioned that I knew someone who had been in Sarawak.

“That’s where we were!” exclaimed Betsy.

“Do you know Mike McCone?” I asked.

“Of course! He was our director!” said Pogo (Hugh).

In great excitement, I emailed Mike with a short note: “Hold on to your hat: Betsy and Pogo say hi!”

Of course Mike remembered them well, and now we’re all amazed at how small a world it really is, especially for members of the well-connected and widely traveled Heyday community.
