Publisher’s Note: A new direction for Yosemite Conservancy

Visitors to Heyday often look at our books and proclaim, “These are your children.” I’ve got three kids and have never mistaken any one of them for a book, yet I know what they mean. Our books are often conceived with more passion than planning, they’re nurtured with emotion and commitment, and they are sent out into the world with pride. We fret about them, nurse them through periods of trouble, find them exasperating at times (“After all we’ve done for you…”), then show them off to visitors as if they were perfect. Some leave home and we hardly ever hear from them again, while others stay in close touch and in some cases generate other books—grandchildren, so to speak.

In addition to caring for our own, we occasionally take in foster children, books that began life elsewhere but because of some circumstance come to Heyday to be raised. The books we had been publishing for Yosemite fell into that category. When my friend Steve Medley, executive director of the Yosemite Association, died in an automobile accident in 2006, the Association’s visionary and award-winning publishing program was in danger of collapse. I was serving on the Association board at the time, and we brought the publishing program into Heyday for safe-keeping. In the last five years we’ve trimmed, shaped, and strengthened its backlist, added some significant new books to its frontlist, and worked hard to preserve a publishing program capacious enough to convey something of the luminous wonder of Half Dome, El Capitan, the Merced River, and the lofty and magnificent backcountry. Meanwhile the Yosemite Association merged with another organization, the Yosemite Fund, to create the Yosemite Conservancy. Now that it’s able to take care of its own publishing activities, we’re handing the Yosemite books over to the Conservancy. It was an honor and a privilege to have had this program as part of Heyday, and in truth we’ll miss it greatly. But it’s home where it belongs now, in healthy shape, and in the care of people who will continue its tradition of visionary publishing.
