Timberline’s Story

Heyday author Erika Mailman referred to a photo of a Dodge City, KS prostitute named Timberline for inspiration while writing her novel, Woman of Ill Fame, a murder mystery centered around a prostitute in gold rush San Francisco. (Timberline’s original photo from the Kansas State Historical Society is above, along with the final cover design of the book.) Someone reading Erika’s blog, World of Mailman, did some investigating and uncovered details of Timberline’s life, including her true name—Rose Vastine. Sad to say, Timberline had a hard life. Moreover, Erika was quite shocked to have her muse’s story “rewritten”! Erika has more of the details behind Timberline’s life at her blog.
